History of Ikarus 280

Bus which is a legend of our roads. It is the sign of crude 80s when after light decade of Edward Gierek and life on credit we went back to gray, shady reality of late communism era. Mass suppliers of Ikarus buses happened after martial law introduction and winter of century, during it most of used then Jelcz PR-11OU were stopped at depots due to technical issues and production of new buses were cut down due to sanctions. That is why it was decided to import Ikaruses from Hungary. Athough on begging of 80s it was not so sure yet. Due to memories of Ikarus workers from that time, decision to start the import of Ikaruses was done basing of trivial accident. In Warsaw high-capacity buses were tested for urban transport. The main competitor of Ikarus 280 was MAN SG22. During the operation an accident happened between Ikarus 280 and MAN SG220 and these two buses was not able to operate anymore. This accident was a good test for speed and accuracy of service from these manufacturers. Ikarus was fixed in two days and for spare parts for MAN operator had to wait for two weeks. And the decision was made and Ikarus was choosen. Ikarus 280.70E is an version from 90s. It can be liked for turbocharged Raba D10 engine. Its hard, louda and clear whirr is delicious and soothing like an serie from machine gun and with huge speed bus sound like mermaid Ikaruses after a dozen years of exploitation in Poland usuallly looked poorly – in opposite for Hungary. Lacks of sheets, low quality varnishes and materials decided on overall poor look of these buses. Hundreds of these buses were scrapped by now but this one can remind us an climate of journey of 90s when loud engine, trembling glasses accompanied us every day.
